PPF bubbles, haze and lifting edges: what's normal and how to fix it

Which paint protection film problems clear up on their own after install, which ones need fixing, and exactly how to fix them.

AP Motor Co · Updated September 30, 2026 · 2 min read

Right after you install paint protection film, it rarely looks perfect. Some of what you see is normal and disappears on its own. Some of it needs attention. Here's how to tell the difference.

Normal: small water bubbles

Tiny pockets of slip solution trapped under the film are expected. Film is slightly breathable, and moisture works its way out over one to two weeks, faster in warm weather. Leave them alone.

Normal: haze or a milky look

Fresh film often looks a little cloudy while moisture is still under it. This clears as it dries. Park in the sun if you can to speed it up.

Fix it: lifting edges

An edge that lifts in the first day is usually still wet underneath. Wait a day, then press it down firmly with a microfiber-wrapped finger or squeegee, with a little heat. If it keeps lifting:

  1. Gently lift the edge a little further.
  2. Spray a small amount of tack solution (alcohol and water) underneath.
  3. Press it down and squeegee toward the edge.
  4. Warm it slightly with a hair dryer and hold pressure for a few seconds.

Fix it: air bubbles that don't shrink

Air (not water) bubbles stay the same size over time. Small ones can sometimes be pushed to the nearest edge with a squeegee and heat. If one is trapped in the middle of a panel, a very fine needle can release it, then press it flat. Go carefully.

Fix it: dirt specks under the film

A bump with a speck in the middle is debris trapped during install. If the film is still fresh, you can sometimes lift it back to that point with slip solution, remove the speck with tape or a lint-free cloth, and re-lay it. Prevention is easier: clay the paint and keep the work area dust-free.

Fix it: stretch marks and lines

Lines in the film usually come from over-stretching on a curve. Heat can relax small ones. Large ones often mean the piece needs to be lifted and re-laid more evenly.
