How to remove PPF without damaging your paint

A step-by-step method for removing old paint protection film safely: heat, angle, patience, and how to clean up adhesive residue afterward.

AP Motor Co · Updated October 4, 2026 · 2 min read

Whether you're replacing worn film or taking off a bad install, removing PPF is mostly about heat and patience. Done carefully on factory paint, film comes off cleanly.

What you need

  • A heat gun or a strong hair dryer (or a hot, sunny day)
  • A plastic razor blade or old credit card
  • Citrus-based adhesive remover or a dedicated PPF adhesive remover
  • Isopropyl alcohol and microfiber towels

Step by step

  1. Warm the panel. Heat softens the adhesive. Work in sections about the size of a sheet of paper. The film should feel warm, not hot. If it's too hot to touch, you've gone too far.
  2. Lift a corner. Use a fingernail or a plastic blade at an edge. Never use metal near paint.
  3. Peel low and slow. Pull the film back over itself at a low angle, close to the surface, rather than straight up. Steady, slow pulls leave less adhesive behind.
  4. Keep heating ahead of the peel. As you pull, warm the next section so the adhesive stays soft.
  5. Clean up residue. Spray adhesive remover, let it sit for a minute, and wipe. Finish with isopropyl alcohol to remove any oily film.
  6. Inspect and protect. Wash the panel and check the paint. If you're not installing new film right away, apply a wax or sealant.

If the film is old and brittle

Older films, especially ones that have yellowed, can tear into small pieces instead of peeling in sheets. Use more heat, go slower, and accept that it'll take longer. A steamer can help soften stubborn adhesive.

When paint comes off with the film

On factory paint in good condition this is rare. It usually means the panel was repainted at some point and the clear coat wasn't properly bonded. Stop, and talk to a body shop before continuing.

Installing new film after removal

Wash, clay and wipe down the panel with an alcohol mix before laying new film. Any leftover adhesive will show under the new piece. Our install guide covers prep in detail.
