How long does PPF last?

How many years paint protection film lasts, what shortens its life, how to tell when it's time to replace it, and how to make it last longer.

Modern paint protection film commonly lasts somewhere between five and ten years, and many films carry warranties in that range. Our film is warranted for 10 years against yellowing, cracking, bubbling and peeling.

How long yours actually lasts depends mostly on sun, washing habits and what the car goes through.

What shortens PPF life

Sun exposure. UV is the biggest factor. Cars parked outside in hot, sunny climates age film faster than garaged cars in mild climates.

Harsh chemicals. Strong solvents, aggressive degreasers and some bug removers can damage the top coat over time.

Pressure washing the edges. Blasting a film edge from close range can lift it. Keep the nozzle back and avoid aiming straight at edges.

Heavy abrasion. Film absorbs chips and scratches so your paint doesn't. Over years of highway driving, the front edge of the film takes a beating, which is exactly its job.

Signs it's time to replace it

  • Yellowing or a cloudy look, mostly on older films
  • Edges that lift and won't stay down
  • Cracking or a dry, brittle texture
  • Damage deep enough that the film no longer protects

Replacing a worn front end is a lot cheaper than repainting one. That's the point of film: it's a sacrificial layer.

How to make PPF last longer

  1. Park in a garage or shade when you can.
  2. Wash regularly with a pH-neutral car shampoo.
  3. Keep pressure-washer nozzles at least a foot or two from film edges.
  4. Consider a ceramic coating on top of the film. It adds UV resistance and makes the film easier to clean.
  5. Remove bird droppings and bug splatter promptly.

Self-healing

Most modern films have a top coat that lets light swirl marks and scratches disappear with heat. Warm sun, warm water or a careful pass with a heat gun is usually enough. It won't fix a gouge, but it keeps the film looking new far longer than you might expect.
