Clear bra vs. PPF: is there a difference?
Clear bra, paint protection film, PPF, clear film: they're mostly names for the same thing. Here's where the terms came from and what actually matters when you buy.

Short answer: a "clear bra" is paint protection film. Most people use the two names for the same product: a clear, flexible film applied to the front of a car to stop rock chips and scratches.
Where the name "clear bra" comes from
Before clear film was common, people protected the front of their cars with a car bra: a black vinyl or leather cover that fit over the bumper and hood. It worked, but it changed how the car looked, trapped grit against the paint and had to come off to wash the car.
Clear urethane film did the same job without hiding the paint, so it picked up the nickname "clear bra." Today installers and manufacturers mostly call it paint protection film, or PPF, and you'll see all three names used for the same thing.
What actually matters when you buy
The name doesn't tell you much. These do:
- Material. Modern PPF is thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). Older and cheaper films can yellow or crack over time.
- Thickness. Measured in mils. Thicker film absorbs more impact. Our kits use 8.5 mil TPU.
- Self-healing. Good film has a top coat that lets light swirl marks disappear with heat from the sun or warm water.
- Coverage. Which panels are covered matters more than anything. See partial front vs. full front vs. full body.
- Fit. Film cut for your exact year and trim fits the bumper's openings and edges. Generic sheets don't.
Clear bra vs. ceramic coating
People sometimes confuse the two. A ceramic coating is a thin liquid layer that makes paint glossier and easier to clean, but it won't stop a rock chip. PPF is a physical layer that does. Many owners use both. More in PPF vs. ceramic coating.
